Traveling Via Carry On - Even with Toddlers

April 10, 2019

It doesn't have to be hectic

Isn't traveling so much fun? But really, I actually love traveling only because it brings you to new places. Exploring new places is one of my favorite things to do.

I used to be an "always-check-a-bag" kind of girl before I met my husband. I had a giant leopard print suitcase set that I used everywhere I went. I packed every type of shoe and almost every outfit I owned. But that quickly changed with the vast amount of traveling we do, not wanting to wait in even more airport lines, wanting to have access to everything in our bags and my newfound skillset of being able to pack all three of us in three backpacks. If you had told me that I would be able to travel with only a backpack 7 years ago I would have laughed at you.

In our upcoming travel logs we're headed to Florida for both of Jax's Uncle's Helicopter Pilot Training Graduation. YAY! Did I mention that not only was I in the military, but so are all of my husband's siblings as well as my brother? Safe to say we do a TON of traveling. But because of my newfound skill of packing three backpacks easily and efficiently, traveling isn't as stressful.

First, we'll start with Jax's new backpack that he is obsessed with. You can find it, or some like it, at Target. In his backpack I pack the 10 things that will be useful to him throughout the flight:

_______________________________________________________________________________
1. Diapers and wipes

Make sure it is plural diapers, even if it is a short flight. Trust me, it is better to be safe than sorry.

_______________________________________________________________________________

2. Change of clothes

I have made the mistake of not packing this in the past.

As he sat on my lap (before he was 2) I felt that inevitable warm feeling on my leg and knew he had leaked through his outfit.

This is a necessity.

_______________________________________________________________________________
3. Hat

We just loop his hat around the backpack handle.

We always bring a hat (either a beanie during Winter or ball cap during Summer) with us wherever we go because we always end up needing one.

_______________________________________________________________________________
4. Snacks

I used to always pack him a bottle for takeoff because it helps soothe them and prevent gas from the altitude.

Now I try to pack a few healthy snacks that aren't full of sugar (so he won't be even more wild on the plane) that I know he likes to eat. He loves Larabars and the Bare fruit chips so that's what we will bring this week.

I throw fruit snacks in the backpack for emergency purposes πŸ˜….

_______________________________________________________________________________
5. Cup

This kid is ALWAYS thirsty so I always bring a leakproof Munchkin cup that we can fill up once we get through security.

I love the Munchkin brand and have never had one of their cups that I didn't like.

_______________________________________________________________________________
6. Bandaids

I always have those in my diaper bag as well, just in case.

I mean, isn't it a mom thing to carry bandaids?

Sometimes I bring our travel first aid kit as well.

_______________________________________________________________________________
7. Antibacterial

Planes are gross so of course I bring the Babyganics antibacterial with me everywhere we go.

I love that it's alcohol free!

_______________________________________________________________________________

8. Ipad/Headphones/Charger

Unfortunately we're not the no screen time parents. When we want him to wind down for the night we let him watch a few shows that he likes. This also works on the plane.

My cousin recommended these awesome pair of foldable kids headphones. He tried them on already and LOVES them.

And most importantly don't forget the charger for the iPad!

_______________________________________________________________________________
9. Book

I like to bring multiple forms of entertainment with us.

If the Ipad doesn't entertain him hopefully the book will.

It's a small book (doesn't take up much room) and we now have our usual bedtime story in order to keep him in a somewhat regular routine.

_______________________________________________________________________________
10. Sunglasses

We're going to Florida, so of course he needs sunglasses.

Gotta protect his little baby eyes.

_______________________________________________________________________________

That is just his little backpack that he now wears on his own back. On top of that I pack his diaper bag backpack full of all his clothes, shoes and diapers that he will need for the trip. Count out how many days you will be there and add on 2-4 extra outfits. If you have access to a washer and dryer you won't need to bring the extras! Another HUGE detail is stroller and carseat. We usually rent carseats where we're landing or just gate check a cheap carseat (look on facebook market for these so that you don't ruin your own carseat). For strollers I use one of those $20, small, foldable one that can fit in the overhead bins. Waalaaa, easier, stress-free toddler traveling.

Now, onto adult carryon contents!

I will show you how I have learned to pack my own carryon quickly and efficiently. My husband and I do this when traveling overseas as well because we don't have to worry about losing luggage or finding where foreign baggage claims are. As you can see below, we walked around Paris with our carry-on backpacks for a whole day before we got to our Airbnb---It makes for so much more convenient travel!
The key is to look up the weather ahead of time, count the number of days you will be there and plan your outfits out.

_______________________________________________________________________________

1. Shoes
Depending on the season and where I am going I will pack 1-2 pairs of shoes. If its cold I will be wearing a pair of boots and pack a pair of my Nikes. If its warm or we're going to a fancy event I wear my Nikes, pack heels and pack my sandals. Shoes take up a lot of room so you need to decide which ones are a necessity.
_______________________________________________________________________________

2. Shower materials
I still have that leopard print flair that I used to have, but it's now downsized to a shower bag πŸ’. I always bring my own shower materials in 3oz bottles. I put them in a plastic bag or my shower bag. Going through security I only have to take that one small bag out if we don't have pre-check, so it isn't a hassle to me because I put it at the top of my backpack. I also put my brush in the picture because I have forgotten it at some points and that's a huge NO for me to forget!
_______________________________________________________________________________

3. Outfits
Here I have 4 nice outfits that I can mix and match. I have two athletic wear outfits for when we have downtime and we're relaxing. I plan out my outfits ahead of time and pack one for each day, plus a lounge outfit or two. I always bring at least one type of sweater or jacket that will go with most, if not all, my outfits. This of course takes ahead-of-time planning, but it is so much easier than checking your bags.
_______________________________________________________________________________

4. Wallet/Phone/Charger/Headphones
The essentials of course. Don't forget your charger!

I just got this wallet this past weekend and like it a lot because my phone can fit inside of it.

_______________________________________________________________________________

5. Water bottle
I usually always bring one to fill up once were through security. This reusable  Starbucks one is convenient because you can hook it to your backpack if you don't have a cup holder on the side of your backpack.
_______________________________________________________________________________

6. Hat & Sunglasses
Just like for Jax's bag I always bring a hat and hook this onto the backpack handle. Florida is sunny so I will definitely be using a hat as well as my sunglasses. I bring the case so they won't get ruined.
_______________________________________________________________________________

7. Pain medicine/Chapstick/Peppermint Oil
My chapstick is a given because I can't go half a day without chapstick. I also bring pain medicine and Peppermint Oil because these are both helpful for aches and pains, soreness from walking a lot more than usual, headaches and nausea (the peppermint oil helps stop that).
_______________________________________________________________________________

8. Book
Have you ever been stuck on a plane without some source of entertainment? I have and it's horrible. Now, no matter what, I bring a book. I may have a chance to sneak in a few pages when my son quiets down.

I just read Rachel Hollis' new book Girl, Stop Apologizing so I went out and bought her first book right away. Girl, Wash Your Face is next on my list!
_______________________________________________________________________________

And that's it for my bag! My husband basically packs the same thing before every trip as well.

That's really all you need. It is that simple. Traveling doesn't need to be crazy or stressful as long as you plan ahead. You will never lose luggage or have late luggage with this technique---And if your baby or toddler happens to spit up or spill something on you, you now both have your change of clothes accessible right there.

***If you are traveling overseas don't forget that passport!

EGGcited for Easter- Peep into Jax's basket to find 5 options besides candy

April 7, 2019

We finally hit the 70s this weekend and it was glorious. There is nothing quite like Springtime after an EXTRA long winter season. This weekend the birds were back to chirping outside, I pulled a weed already and Jax even got a little shirt tan when we went to the zoo! Which means, Easter is coming and it will be here before you know it (about two weeks to be exact).

When I was little we used to get the best Easter baskets. Holidays were (and still are) my absolute favorite time of year, and Easter was one of those holidays. My Mom would make sure our baskets looked perfect-They were always vibrant, wrapped in that brightly colored cellophane, filled with so many candies and special treats. I especially remember one year when I finally got that sparkly, colorful nail polish that I loved. She made sure to fill our Easter baskets with candy and items that we loved. We always got one of those solid chocolate crosses as well because "Jesus is the reason for the season", as my parents always used to say (He is the reason for Easter after all, so don't forget). My two sisters, my brother and I would dress up in our fancy Easter outfits, go to church, come home and open our baskets- but sometimes we attempted to break into our candy before Church πŸ˜‚

Holidays were always a big deal, and I have come to love Holidays even more with my own family now. Watching Jax's face light up is always the best feeling and brings back a feeling of childhood joy.

I try to vary up what I put in his basket. I always put something educational (like a book), a learning toy (last year was a mini classic bead maze that you always find in doctor's offices), an outfit or two, a fun accessory (last year was bunny ears) and of course candy. I know, he'll have a sugar high all day long, but I don't mind when it's only a few times a year. He LOVES jellybeans so I can't keep them from him (well I could but ya know).
So...Easter baskets. What to put in them? I'll share with you what I plan to put in Jax's Easter basket this year as well as a cute Easter/Spring craft we did a few weeks ago.

This year in his basket he'll get:

5 options besides candy

2 shirts - Target $6.00 each
He will get a Marvel shirt because he is obsessed with the Hulk right now and loves watching The Avengers cartoons on Netflix with Dad when Dad is home from work & a Star Wars shirt because Mom is a Star Wars nerd. Spring is here and with this warm weather he will need an abundance of T-shirts.

A book - Target $9.59
Happy Easter Curious George-I gave this to him a bit early so that we could read it throughout the Easter season. Buttt it will still be going in his Easter basket since he won't realize it yet!
Accessory - Target $5.99
He'll be getting a pair of sunglasses this year because he loves putting on our sunglasses. I got these cute one from Target that resemble Dad's pair! He'll be looking stylish when he wears these to the zoo.

Toy

His Busia and Dziadz sent us an assortment of jungle animal figures to put in his basket. He loves lining them up and playing pretend with them. You can see his imagination working when he plays. He will LOVE these!

Kids Flossers - Target $2.99
We just went to the dentist and she recommended starting to try and use them. That should be interesting!

Candy - Target $2.69
And of course I will fill a few of the usual eggs full of jelly beans and peanut butter M&Ms, his favorite! I'm a Mama who can't resist giving him a little bit of candy.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Now onto crafting!

Supplies:
Canvas
Cotton Rounds
Paint
Glue

This craft is super easy and super cheap! I found this cute egg shaped sign in the Target bargain bins for $3 so that's what we used as a "canvas". I already had paint at home so I just had to buy $.99 fluff balls for the bunny tail (if you have cotton rounds this works too).
I used his footprint for the back of the bunny and his handprints for the carrot tops! I love capturing his handprints and footprints in the crafts that we do. He has giant hands so it looks a bit disproportionate, but that's the fun of kids crafts right?
All you need to do is paint one hand and one foot and push it onto the board. I drew on the bunny ears, the grass, and the bottoms of the carrots since he isn't old enough to be able to do this by himself yet. After the paint dried I glued the bunny tail on, and that's it! Super easy, fast craft to make for a cute spring and Easter decoration for around the house.

Fun fact: Easter egg hunts prove your child really can find things when they want to

April: Military Child Appreciation Month

April 6, 2019

April is the month of the Military Child and there are around 1.2 million children of Active Duty Members in the U.S.

I never knew they had a special month until we had our own son.

I have so many military friends out there who have their own little kiddos and it's time to celebrate them! Some of you reading this right now may even be a military mom yourself or the wife of a military service member. And your kids truly deserve recognition!
I thank God everyday that I got medically discharged from the Air Force because otherwise life would have been even more insane and we probably wouldn't have our little Jackson. I never would have said that three years ago when I was in the middle of getting discharged, during my dream of becoming a pilot, but it was such a blessing in disguise. I applaud all those mil-to-mil spouses out there who make it work! But God's plan for us was different.

Jax has already been through two deployments (and numerous long TDYs) since he was born and he is only 2 years old. The first deployment was much harder on us (than him) because Jax wasn't aware of what was going on yet being that he was only four months old. It was even harder because my husband would be missing his first Father's Day with Jax. Let's clear things up, my husband is different than most---my husband lives for family and would be a stay at home dad if we could afford that---his core belief is FAMILY and he is an amazing dad with infinite love for Jax. Because of this we were both upset that he would be separated from Jax at such a young age. My husband felt like he was going to miss so much and that Jax wouldn't remember him when he got back. We were lucky enough to be able to plan a visit to see him half way through his deployment and this made the deployment easier for all of us and gave us a lot to look forward to. We flew out to Okinawa, Japan for about a week...my sister-in-law (Katie) and I flew on a plane for 13 hours (and then another for 3-4) with a four month old just so he could see his Daddy. Some would say we were crazy. πŸ˜‚ But it was worth it and was such a fun experience (even if he'll never remember it), and if Jax was older I would do it again in a heartbeat. We were able to celebrate a belated Father's Day and experience so many new things together as a family.
Special shoutout and huge thank you to Katie, Dziadz and Busia for making this possible-without you guys it never would have been possible!

If you ever have a chance to do this with your military children and it doesn't create too much stress or anxiety I would definitely try to. A lot of children from civilian families aren't able to experience other cultures and see other parts of the world but that is one of the huge positives to being in a military family! It creates a set of unique adaptive skills that they will use for their entire life. But the same thing that creates a sense of adventure and adaptation can also create a lot of issues for your military child.

The constant moving is not always easy on them. It breaks their normal routine and creates so much change and moving pieces in their lives. The "military brat" oftentimes can develop psychological issues, have issues at school and act out more often. This is why communication is key for a military family. Make sure you get them the help they need or seek counseling if you can't talk them through it. The next time you are stressed about your upcoming move or the next deployment make sure you check on your children's emotions as well, they are going through just as much (if not more) and may not know how to handle it or express it.

Even though military life can cause more stress on children, take advantage of all the advantages it can bring. You'll travel across the states, and possibly countries, and that helps create a certain type of resilience and adventure in a person. Acknowledge that resilience and love them for it. Thank them for being the way they are and making the sacrifices they make. Take advantage of all the special discounts that are available to military children as well. Here you will find places that have those discounts and special deals! Treat your children for all they go through and take them somewhere special.

But mostly, just love your children every moment that you can. Take advantage of the times you have together as a family and the little day to day moments that you share. Create a positive environment for them as much as possible. Communicate with teachers what your children are going through and if a spouse is on a deployment. Create a deployment wall to help them visually see what is going on. Get books that help them emotionally understand what is going on. Talk, talk, talk.

Take care of them. They are tough πŸ’ͺ but deployments are tougher. Check out my page on How to take care of the kids during a deployment for more helpful information. These kids deserve all the recognition they can get because their strength and resilience is incredible.

Thank a military child this month! πŸ’œ

To Organic or Not to Organic?

April 4, 2019

πŸŒ±πŸƒπŸ‹πŸŒΏπŸŒ±πŸƒπŸ‹πŸŒΏπŸŒ±πŸƒπŸ‹πŸŒΏπŸŒ±
Since I've become a mom I really look into what products I'm bringing home.

I used to buy whatever product had a good price, products that I liked the look of or products based off of smell (cleaning products that smelt like bleach...it must be doing its job then right?). But so much has changed since then!

Having Jax made me want to buy everything as non-toxic, natural and organic as possible (without being a crazy person about it). I realized that these types of products work even better and a huge plus is that they smell delicious.  When I used the regular baby soaps and lotions on Jax it made his eczema (that he got about a year ago) even worse. This did not make me happy. I saw Tubby Todd on Instagram and was super interested in it, but hadn't purchased anything yet. My sister Liz, who recently had a baby as well, gifted me the Tubby Todd All Over Ointment and let me just say I have never been happier and neither has Jax's skin! This stuff is seriously miracle cream and a little goes a long way. I highly recommend anyone with children to start using their products ASAP because they are amazing.

(This post contains affiliate links, and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links.)

Here are quite a few of their awesome products and my adorable nephew Luke!
And you can go directly to their website here.

Other products that I have really come to love are non-toxic/natural cleaning products. Jax was crawling everywhere, touching everything and dropping food on all surfaces---I knew I needed to change the cleaning products that I used. Did I mention that all of these cleaning products can be found at your local Target? πŸ’

As seen in the picture below:
-Method wood floor cleaner that smells like cookies with its almond scent
-Seventh Generation Dish Detergent
-Mrs. Meyer's Lavender All Purpose Cleaner which smells amazing
-Mrs. Meyer's Honeysuckle Dish Soap...did I mention that of course smells amazing
Get a free gift set with your first order from Grovegrove.pxf.io/c/1411189/485594/8442

Daily products Jax and I use are in the pictures below (annnddd all smell wonderful).
-My products: Lush Sleepy Lotion, Witch Hazel Rose Toner, Acure Argan Oil and Pumpkin conditioner, Shea Moisture Coconut Hibiscus Hold and Shine Moisture Mist and of course some Raw Sugar Chapstick.
-Jax's products: Babyganics Alcohol Free Mandarin Hand Sanitizer, Tubby Todd All Over Ointment and Hello Organic Apple Flavor Training Toothpaste.

Jax is happy because he just used Tubby Todd bath products! And look at his no more eczema skin!

Below are a bunch of great products to check out for you and your family to start going non toxic!

To Do List: Read More

April 2, 2019

What's on your reading list right now?

I finally started reading again after what seemed like countless excuses not to (not counting children's bedtime stories). But why make excuses for something that I love to do? Instead of putting down my phone at night and grabbing a new book, I would be sitting for hours scrolling through my phone trying to get tired. Who does this too? I finally gave myself a swift kick in the a**. I bought myself a cute reading light from Target and a great new book to read and just did it.

If you haven't heard about Rachel Hollis' new book, Girl, Stop Apologizing, it is amazing. I started reading it last night and I am already half way through it. Seriously though, it is amazing. Target was carrying it early, with a special discount, so I picked it up about two weeks ago with my handy dandy new reading light.  Did I mention that this new reading lamp has a usb port, a plug, and storage? I store my essentials in it- my "nighttime" chapstick, my headphones, my latest book/s, tv remote, my Lush Sleepy bedtime lotion, and my son's Tubby Todd Natural All Over Ointment. Those are all essentials right? πŸ˜‰

Anyways, back to this awesome book...
Even if you're not really the type of person that reads "self help" or "motivational" books you will most likely enjoy reading this book. Her tone of writing is simple yet so easy to relate to. She talks about the excuses we, as females, make and how that cuts off our dreams and goals. And that's just the beginning! My sister in law already asked to borrow it when I'm done so you know that this book is making waves throughout the female community.

I can't put this book down even this morning! But it may have to wait until 1230 nap-time because my son is currently running around the kitchen with his hockey sticks and banging them on the cabinets as I try to take the picture below 😬. Who else has mornings like this?
I like to pretend I have "time" to sit and drink my Dunkin' Donuts K-cup coffee out of my AMAZING new Starbucks reusable mermaid cup (don't judge for drinking Dunkin' out of a Starbucks cup) but I don't when my little man has his morning energy. Most mornings consist of my son running around like a wild man while I make him breakfast and I quickly scarf down a coffee and a Lara Bar (Whole 30 saviorrrrrr- don't tell Marissa Hartwig- she would be upset with me for not eating a "real" breakfast). But that's kind of just how life goes sometimes.

The next time you have a little time on your hands pick up this book and start reading. No more excuses.

Comment below with reading suggestions!

P.S. Also on my reading list is Happy Easter Curious George, ya know, because I have a 2 year old.
