DIY Deployment Wall

October 19, 2019

Here's one for all the military families out there!

Nick is deployed again and I've been wanting to make this "wall" for Jax. We'll just call it a Deployment Wall, because that's pretty much what it is.

Deployments suck...We all know that by now (and if you're new to the deployment game I'm sorry). I thought this wall would be a great way for Jax to visually understand what's going on. He's at a weird age now where he knows Dad is supposed to be home and he realizes he misses him, but he doesn't know how to process that emotion quite yet. We've had a few moments right off the bat, when I was dealing with my own "fresh" deployment emotions as well, where he would randomly say I hug Dad, or ask me if Dad was home, and it would bring a few tears to my eyes. I had to explain that no he's at work right now so we can't hug him. But that inspired me to make this wall for him.
This wall has all the goodies, and is a good way to keep him excited every day about counting down the days until Dad comes home. There a few activities involved that really could be fun for kids of all ages. I'll go on explaining each piece of the wall so that you can personalize your own for your kiddos!

Left Side
On the left side of the wall I have a cork board with some fun activities. I got the cork board as well as the picture hanger from Target in the $1 bin section! Jax gets to change Dad's weather ☀☁☂☃, which we check everyday on my phone. I just printed out some google images of some cute looking cartoon weather and printed out all of the titles. The extra weathers are pinned onto the board to switch out as the weather changes! He also gets to add a plane onto the board for every flight Dad flies, which he of course loves to do since he is obsessed with ✈ "Dad's plane" ✈. The extras are also pinned to the board. On the board as well as below the board I put a few of my favorite military/homecoming pictures that we took.

Middle Section
The middle section is made up of a couple of shelves with a few personal touches. Of course Dad's time zone he is in is on the clock 🕣up above. I have a chalkboard countdown calendar (from the Target $1 bins) that we change everyday. The jar is filled with the number of candies 🍬 for how many days are left. Jax looks forward to eating a candy everyday and it is also a WONDERFUL visual for everyone. When you see how small of an amount of candies are left it really puts time into a different perspective 😊. On the bottom shelf I printed out a kids world map and placed it in a frame. I did this so that we could circle where on the map Dad is with a wet erase marker. I put one of his stuffed animals that correlates to where he is deployed to, as well as one of Jax's toy planes. Very simple, yet very fun for Jax.

Right Side
Lastly, on the right side I have another $1 bin Target chalkboard sign with a quote that really speaks to me. I hung up an extra pair of Nick's dog tags I had made that have a special quote from us on them. It's a nice personal memento he carries in his pocket every flight. So I feel like we have a piece of him here while he's away. Again, another $1 Target find, I have a kids wall hanger and I hung up Jax's flight suit and aviator goggles. He can dress up like Dad whenever he feels like it!

Final touches
A fun little banner I made to add more color that says Daddys Deployment. All you need is some construction paper and twine/string! I put Jax's favorite "Dad"/Deployment books that we have underneath so that he can choose a story to read every night.

You can really personalize this space however you like and make it your own! Add personal touches that your kids will love and activities that they would like to participate in. It's good to get them involved. Think of all the emotions you go through when your spouse leaves then amplify that for your kids! They are going through a lot and this is one way to help them understand those emotions.

April: Military Child Appreciation Month

April 6, 2019

April is the month of the Military Child and there are around 1.2 million children of Active Duty Members in the U.S.

I never knew they had a special month until we had our own son.

I have so many military friends out there who have their own little kiddos and it's time to celebrate them! Some of you reading this right now may even be a military mom yourself or the wife of a military service member. And your kids truly deserve recognition!
I thank God everyday that I got medically discharged from the Air Force because otherwise life would have been even more insane and we probably wouldn't have our little Jackson. I never would have said that three years ago when I was in the middle of getting discharged, during my dream of becoming a pilot, but it was such a blessing in disguise. I applaud all those mil-to-mil spouses out there who make it work! But God's plan for us was different.

Jax has already been through two deployments (and numerous long TDYs) since he was born and he is only 2 years old. The first deployment was much harder on us (than him) because Jax wasn't aware of what was going on yet being that he was only four months old. It was even harder because my husband would be missing his first Father's Day with Jax. Let's clear things up, my husband is different than most---my husband lives for family and would be a stay at home dad if we could afford that---his core belief is FAMILY and he is an amazing dad with infinite love for Jax. Because of this we were both upset that he would be separated from Jax at such a young age. My husband felt like he was going to miss so much and that Jax wouldn't remember him when he got back. We were lucky enough to be able to plan a visit to see him half way through his deployment and this made the deployment easier for all of us and gave us a lot to look forward to. We flew out to Okinawa, Japan for about a week...my sister-in-law (Katie) and I flew on a plane for 13 hours (and then another for 3-4) with a four month old just so he could see his Daddy. Some would say we were crazy. 😂 But it was worth it and was such a fun experience (even if he'll never remember it), and if Jax was older I would do it again in a heartbeat. We were able to celebrate a belated Father's Day and experience so many new things together as a family.
Special shoutout and huge thank you to Katie, Dziadz and Busia for making this possible-without you guys it never would have been possible!

If you ever have a chance to do this with your military children and it doesn't create too much stress or anxiety I would definitely try to. A lot of children from civilian families aren't able to experience other cultures and see other parts of the world but that is one of the huge positives to being in a military family! It creates a set of unique adaptive skills that they will use for their entire life. But the same thing that creates a sense of adventure and adaptation can also create a lot of issues for your military child.

The constant moving is not always easy on them. It breaks their normal routine and creates so much change and moving pieces in their lives. The "military brat" oftentimes can develop psychological issues, have issues at school and act out more often. This is why communication is key for a military family. Make sure you get them the help they need or seek counseling if you can't talk them through it. The next time you are stressed about your upcoming move or the next deployment make sure you check on your children's emotions as well, they are going through just as much (if not more) and may not know how to handle it or express it.

Even though military life can cause more stress on children, take advantage of all the advantages it can bring. You'll travel across the states, and possibly countries, and that helps create a certain type of resilience and adventure in a person. Acknowledge that resilience and love them for it. Thank them for being the way they are and making the sacrifices they make. Take advantage of all the special discounts that are available to military children as well. Here you will find places that have those discounts and special deals! Treat your children for all they go through and take them somewhere special.

But mostly, just love your children every moment that you can. Take advantage of the times you have together as a family and the little day to day moments that you share. Create a positive environment for them as much as possible. Communicate with teachers what your children are going through and if a spouse is on a deployment. Create a deployment wall to help them visually see what is going on. Get books that help them emotionally understand what is going on. Talk, talk, talk.

Take care of them. They are tough 💪 but deployments are tougher. Check out my page on How to take care of the kids during a deployment for more helpful information. These kids deserve all the recognition they can get because their strength and resilience is incredible.

Thank a military child this month! 💜

Hi there and welcome to my new blog!

April 1, 2019

Here goes nothing!

As a fairly recent newcomer to motherhood, I have realized that it is hard almost impossible to find REAL moms out there who are down to earth, honest, relatable, and who drop a few F* bombs here and there (oops 😬) .

Being a HUGE extrovert myself and having a love of socializing, sometimes it's hard being stuck at home with only a tiny human being who can't talk yet. Two years into motherhood, with being a mom as my only career, I wanted to have a place of comfort that other moms can come to. I don't want other moms feeling like I have at times--of sometimes having that feeling of needing to do more and feeling inadequate, because at times everyone feels like this. This is just me being raw and sharing parts of my life that only my husband knows about. I will talk about mom stuff, let you know what life is ACTUALLY like being a military wife (and advice on how to survive), post some yummy recipes, help you with how to survive travel with a baby, give you some fun crafts to do with your little ones, and tell you about the products I recommend to help out motherhood. If that interests you at all, take a look around and see if there is anything you like!

Fair warning: I have a foul mouth, I love living in places that have REAL seasons, I can never have too many iced caramel macchiatos, I can eat avocado on almost everything, I absolutely love my family more than anything in this world, and I am obsessed with the color yellow.

No mom is perfect and neither am I.

He's really 2, not 5...But ya know he looked super cute in this pic so I didn't care that the balloon was backwards. Cuz ya know, Mom Life 💁
